Change happens

Do you ever have the feeling that you’ve lost your way? It can creep up on you like a slight mist that becomes increasingly dense, or you’re walking in a familiar town but then find that you’ve turned into an area that you don’t recognise. Something has changed.

How change impacts you?

Large corporations are like seas with constant change causing ripples, swells, and sometimes rogue waves. Changes might occur that don’t affect you directly, but they affect the way you feel about the company. Changes in your department can really rock your boat, or open new opportunities, but the impact of the change whether good or bad can fill you with a sense of restless anxiety. Small and growing companies can change rapidly and whilst you agree with the direction of change, the influx of new people can mean a shuffle of the existing ones, and you might find yourself shunted for
better or for worse.

You get lost when you don’t know that a change has happened. Somehow you missed it. The information passed you by and you feel out of step with the people who have moved forwards into a new organisational state. But there is a remedy, you can go back in your mind to a point where you knew who you were and what was expected of you. Then you can trace through your own history to try to pinpoint the moment when you started to feel uneasy. Also going back to read company
messages and being inquisitive about what’s happening in the company, can help you to catch up.

Embracing change

Sometimes you might think it’s not good to gossip too much about change. But lots of twittering and chattering about things that are happening, are people’s way of accepting change. Talking about it makes it feel more real and sharing your thoughts prevents you from feeling alone. At the point of change there is often misinformation flying around as people are trying to work out what’s happening. But don’t get too hung up on exactly what’s right or wrong, the dust will settle, and a
clearer picture will eventually emerge. Just be aware of the impact it is having on you and be gentle on yourself.
So, don’t be afraid of change, it happens all the time, change can happen somewhere else, but it pays to know about it, change can happen to you, and you need to deal with it. You can initiate change and others around you must accommodate it. But whatever its origin, put some effort into watching it, watching how you feel about it, and talking it through with colleagues. Change can be a source of fun, humour, optimism, and learning, so, don’t get lost, navigate it and embrace it!
