There you are, freshly appointed as a team leader, you have finally got the job you dreamt about. Not only that, but the people in your team are all enthusiastic and welcome your arrival, which is, let’s be honest a celebration in itself!
You are on cloud nine, elated by this amazing opportunity. The only thing that casts a shadow on your happy feeling is the question: how will you effectively manage and inspire a team that is spread across different locations, and you very rarely meet and chat face to face?
By default, socializing, getting to know someone: how they think, work and conduct themselves becomes even more challenging. So, how are you going to manage remotely the team’s expectations, growth aspirations, even frustrations and anything else that comes with the daily work challenges.
Without a doubt, additional leaderships skills are required to effectively manage and motivate a team working remotely and ensure that they are all aligned, collaborate, and manage their collective efforts to a common goal. This is definitely number one on my list, because it all starts with being able to clearly articulate expectations, provide guidance and support when needed. Try to be accessible and responsive as much as you can using any appropriate communications channels.
- Trustworthiness: This is really the foundation of a successfully working relationship and is essential in remote work environments. As a remote team leader, you should be able to trust your team members and also be trustworthy yourself. This includes being reliable, accountable, and transparent in your actions and decisions, be the example!
- Emotional Intelligence: The biggest challenge of remote leadership and for every remote employee is that sometimes you can’t read the room either because of technical hiccups or other challenges. So, understanding and managing your team members emotions effectively becomes one of the top priorities for you as a remote team leader. You should be able to empathize with team members and identify their needs. Emotional intelligence helps in building strong relationships and encouraging a positive work culture.
- Organization and time management: One of the qualities that is self-explanatory and almost always assumed that is present is self-discipline. Remote work often requires independent work, as a remote team leader you should be organized, able to prioritize tasks, and help your team to manage their time effectively. You may need to set clear deadlines, establish goals, and ensure that the team stays on track.
- Tech Savviness: Proficiency with technology is truly vital for remote team leaders. You should have a good understanding of remote collaboration tools, project management software, and communication platforms. Being adept at troubleshooting technical issues can help maintain productivity and efficiency for you and your team.
- Adaptability: Remote work environments can be dynamic, with changing circumstances and evolving challenges for the team leader and the team members.
